Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
